Unity of Two Cultures

Wedding photographer Jason Herda is eloquent in describing Komal and Brian’s big day: “Komal and Brian aspired to do the most Canadian thing ever.… and found a way to celebrate both their cultures and religions equally. Two full ceremonies. Two wedding dresses. Two groom [outfits]. And two portrait sessions. In one remarkable, joyful, and carefully-planned day.”

Jason’s photos certainly reveal the beauty and appeal of the multipart celebration. “We planned every little detail on our own, but our most memorable moment was the unity of the two cultures,” says the lovely bride. “We were able to celebrate both cultures separately while bringing them together. We were able to pay our parents that respect.”

In hindsight, she adds, “We feel our entire wedding was one big special moment.”

Amazingly, the festivities were planned in just two weeks. Komal created a To Do list and split responsibilities with her Other Half. Brian “was in charge of ensuring everything we needed for the Christian wedding … and I took care of things related to the Hindu ceremony. I kept an organiser and every day we made sure we worked on taking care of at least one thing.”

She fell in love with the venue, Cumberland Belle, because it offers both indoor and outdoor space; Komal had her heart set on an outdoor wedding. The style was Rustic Boho, with a colour palette of pastels: light pinks, white and mint green. Touches of greenery, eucalyptus and large pampas added to the vibe. “Simple yet elegant was the goal.”

Komal actually sketched her décor vision for her decorator, including the background arch, the aisle, seating arrangements and tablescape. “I planned the colours and the decorations in a way that they could easily transition from the Hindu ceremony to the Christian ceremony.” The end result was worth it. “We had a small wedding, thanks to COVID, but we loved it just as much, if not more.”
